Bud Larievy
Bud is an experienced educator of 38 years. He has had the pleasure to focus his work on the many issues that face our English Language learners in public schools. The various positions he has held in this field both as a teacher and as an administrator, prepared him to meet the challenging requirements and expectations this job holds. Some of his accomplishments include leading the development of a 2-year strategic plan for improving the instruction and outcomes of English Language Learners. He Implemented and supervised the development of training in Sheltered English Instruction, ESL curriculum, and material for teachers, principals and content specialists that is aligned to state and district goals. He also managed the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Coordinated Program Review and facilitated the Boston Public Schools Corrective Action Plan responses. He has represented the Boston Public Schools on Mayoral appointed Boards of Directors of Boston Agencies as well as attend various community meetings and functions on behalf of ELL students and families. Currently, he is in the position of Interim Senior Program Director and has provided team leadership, creativity, and direction resulting in the realignment of the department’s infrastructure and work plan.
The passion that drives his career and daily work is due to his familial background. Both of his parents are ELL and spoke a language other than English until entering school. His maternal grandfather arrived in the U.S. speaking 5 languages and was only afforded very menial jobs struggling in the worst of times to support his family. Despite many hardships and prejudicial encounters he always espoused the value of education to his children and grandchildren in achieving their dreams and aspirations. His paternal family history is similar although the cultures are different. Today, he celebrates a family that speaks 11 different languages and spans around the world. His work is a reflection of his family and he brings those values and commitment to his practice daily in Boston Public Schools.
Bud and his partner of 30 years (also of Boston Publics Schools) are proud to be residents of the South End. With the purchase their Massachusetts Ave home in 1985, they have witnessed many changes in our neighborhood. Together, they work with the community, families, schools, and residents for mutual respect, support and understanding of the value of cultural diversity. He also brings these values to his work at Washington Gateway Main Streets board of Directors.
